How

Candlelight produces a certain kind of romantic allure that casts a glow—both figuratively and literally—on all elements of a wedding. Whether you choose to decorate your reception tables with colorful, tapered candle centerpieces, or you opt for large votive candles in an outdoor space, candles add a timeless je ne sais quoi to the big day.

Candle Centerpieces That Will Light Up Your Reception

As you'll see in the images below, an open flame is undeniably stunning both in real life and on film. All those flickering flames cast an amber glow that creates an unparalleled ambiance and looks amazing in photographs. (We also happen to think that everyone looks especially beautiful in a candlelit space).

Right. From tapered candles of varying lengths on elegant tabletops to pillar candles lining a winding staircase, you're sure to find the right lighting for your wedding style.

At this stunning wedding, small votive candles were placed in textured glasses and set out among the bouquets on dinner tables. The glowing affect is stunning.

Personalized Unity Candles (wedding Candles)

To create the look for a formal soirée, place tall gold candelabras on your tables. As this Tara Guérard designed wedding proves, they can easily elevate an otherwise simple display.

Here, hanging votive candles in geometric orbs make this industrial wedding venue feel oh-so romantic. And, of course, the additional pillars and votives on the floor don't hurt either.

Discrete and elegant, these votive candles add a glimmering accent to a side table (especially one made of glass) that beautifully compliments a bouquet of flowers, like these light pink roses.

Initials Style Wedding Candles

How beautiful is this layout? Not only is there a tree coming up through the middle of the table (surrounded by ferns and flowers), but the couple opted for tea candles hanging in little glass circles, as well as taller standing column candles.

You know when they say more is more, well this Chicago wedding is the perfect example. We love how these pillar candles are used in groupings on the tables and also in the hanging light fixtures up above.

A gold candlestick and a white taper candle can do no wrong, as shown here with a lush garland of greenery, fruit accents, and small white votives.

How Many Wedding Table Candles Do I Need?: Wedding Styling 101

Sometimes, it's smart to fill open spaces with candlelight. And it's really smart when said area is as pretty as this metallic edged mantel.

Add an old-world touch that meshes well with the historic space. When you're working with a venue this gorgeous, it's really best to not compete.

We're obsessed with these sleek mini vessels. Mix and match metallic containers (each filled with a votive candle or tea light) to create a simple yet modern display on the cake table.

Wedding Candles, Decorations And Centerpieces

We can't decide if this candle-lined staircase is more for show or necessity. For one, it's smart to line tricky areas (like staircases) after dark, but this setup is so dreamy that we'd be tempted to say I do here, too.

When you spend months curating the perfect tablescape, you best show off your handiwork by mixing in candles of varying heights. These tall, black candles and mini votives make the perfect pair.

When you think of candlelight, you often think of a very ethereal, romantic look. But you can totally make it modern by using sleek cylinder vases like these.

Okay, we know you've seen pillar candles placed on the floor. But how cool are these gold-rimmed containers? We have heart-eyes for them—and this backyard wedding in Atlanta.

Lanterns add a special touch to the entrance of this historic church. We especially like how the containers' black rim matches the black iron railing.

You typically see taper candles on set dining tables but they look especially great around this brick fireplace. (Seen here also with pillar candles, votive candles, and candle-filled lanterns.)

We're obsessed with these gold candlesticks, which look as if they were hand-selected from a number of vintage shops to create the perfect (or not so perfect) arrangement.

We can't get enough of this light-filled scene. Who knew the balance of taper candles on tables and bistro lights up above could be so perfect?

Wedding

You already saw lanterns lining a staircase but you can also use these for added romance at the altar. We especially like them clustered in asymmetrical groupings, using different sizes.

While we adore greenery-covered railings (we do) it's really the candles that transform this show-stopping staircase. If windows are the eyes to the soul, then tablescapes are the eyes to, well, . Planning tablescapes is one of our absolute favourite things to do – which is lucky, really, considering we’ve made it our career – but we totally understand why it can seem quite daunting. After all, there are lots of components; and one of these is wedding table candles.

The short (and frankly unhelpful) answer is: as many as you like. But for a longer (and much more useful) answer, we’ve put together our guide on just how many wedding table candles you’ll need to make your vision come to life.

Personalised Wedding Candles & Unity Sets

We’re starting at the extra end of the scale, with the option for 20+ candles on the table. The truth is, aesthetically, you’d be hard-pressed to have too many candles. It’s more a question of practicality and over-crowding: whilst an abundance of wedding table candles are perfect for child-free, romance-heavy indoor weddings, they’re not so ideal at weddings with sharing platters!

For Sharon and Alejandro, we kept the colour palette simple with tall white taper candles, but alternated the heights of the ornate brass candlesticks to add depth and intrigue to the styling. (You can see more here.)

As you can see, at Fiona and James’ wedding we spaced them out a bit more, and used multiple colours to give it plentiful, bountiful Renaissance vibes – we dig. Click here to see more of this beautiful wedding.

The Best Flameless Candles For Wedding In Bulk: No Open Flame

We’re willing to bet that before you read this guide, eight is a number that felt good to you anyway. And you weren’t wrong! With eight candles, you can spread them along a table comfortably to also allow room for other styling elements such as floral centrepieces. Avoid arranging them in 4 sets of 2, if you can; instead opt for randomly-numbered clusters, to stop it looking too formulaic.

An arrangement of six candles can act as a GREAT eye-catcher. Use tall thin taper candles to add height and depth to a tablescape: you’ll draw people’s attention in, and keep it locked.

Odd numbers are always great for candles – and for lots of other styling elements, come to mention it – as they look more ‘Oh these? Just casually put them there!’ than even numbers do. It’s elegant, yet effortless, and contributes to a stylish but laid-back atmosphere on the day. Place the candles at staggered intervals down the table, like we did for Matthew and Stuart’s, for ultimate relaxed chic.

Wedding Personalised Unity Candle Set Of 3 Double Classic

When you’ve got loads of other decorations to fit on the table, like fluffy floral clouds or detail-heavy centrepieces, 4 candles make a really good addition to the display. Rather than being the focus, they’re an extra element to bring height and movement to already gorge tables.

For example, Nicola and Nigel wanted these beautiful bud vases filled with soft blooms on their reception tables, so we added candles that would enhance, rather than compete with, them.

As the song goes, three is the magic number: it might not have been written about candles, but they can look totally magic. On round tables, using three candles of differing heights creates depth and a focal point to your table styling. We always recommend thinner candles for this, to ensure people can actually see the person sitting opposite them across the table. (And who knows? Maybe we’ve just figured out the solution for working out how not to view someone you despise over the table. We just keep giving.)

But they’re not just for round tables, either: as you can see at David and Hazel’s wedding, they look amazing on long trestle tables too.

Understated and elegant, having two candles on the table is the ultimate in rustic supper club chic. They work super well alongside lower, shallower elements on tables such as boughs of foliage,
